Durham attractions, local Durham attractions, County Durham
County Durham has several castles worth exploring but whilst in the city centre a wander around Durham Castle itself is almost obligatory. This Mediaeval fortress is now part of the University College so tours are only available out of term time, which happens to coincide rather nicely with most visitors arriving over the course of the summer months.
The other great monument in Durham is of course Durham Cathedral. Dating back to Norman times, circa 1093, this stunning piece of architecture is justifiably categorised as a World Heritage Site. To make the most of your visit pick up a fact sheet from the local tourist office, or take one of the organised tours on offer.
For those with a further thirst for local history, take a trip to see the Durham Heritage Centre and Museum. The museum is housed within St Mary le Bow Church, and encompasses a wide range of interesting exhibits that will entertain and educate all ages.
The DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery is another popular family attraction. DLI stands for Durham Light Infantry and as such the museum details the regiment’s involvement in both world wars. Whilst in contrast the Durham Art Gallery offers a diverse collection of art and ever changing exhibits.
For a touch of natural splendour check out the University of Durham Botanic Garden on Hollingside Lane, set out over an expansive area of 18 acres. The Garden is made up of dense woodland, as well as lovely picnic areas and even has a tropical house.
